Deriving the Scrambler DNA from the Triumph Scrambler 900 and 1200, the 2024 Triumph Scrambler 400 X is a showstopper on the road, courtesy its iconic, proportionate and classic looks.

Integration of the Scrambler-design elements include:

  • Metal bash plate
  • Headlight grille
  • Twin barrel exhaust with the black cladding
  • Tank grips
  • Knuckle Guards

Engine:

Powered by Triumph’s new 398cc TR-series engine making 39 bhp, the Scrambler 400X is a pleasant motorcycle to ride –  right from the idle, it’s very happy to putter-around in low-RPMs with very small throttle inputs, shines in the mid-range with a meaty wave of torque all the way till 7,500 RPM, after which it gradually trails off as you climb to the 9,200rpm redline.

Handling:

Inspite of the taller stance, 19-inch wheels at the front, the handling on the Scrambler 400 X is very predictable and easy, backed by a good chassis and suspension setup.

Suspension:

The suspension is dialled to be soft, comfortable and plush enabling the Scrambler 400 X to effortlessly glide over poor stretches of road.

Offering NO-adjustability, the wheel travel on front and rear suspension is 150mm.

  • Front Suspension: 43mm USD Big Piston Forks
  • Rear Suspension: Gas mono shock with pre-load adjustment only,

Brakes:

At the front is a single, radial-mount four-piston caliper with a 320mm disc and the rear is single piston floating caliper paired to 230mm disc.

The bite and stopping power of the brakes are quite weak for a motorcycle of such power.☹️

Electronics and Technology:

Triumph has kept the electronics and rider aids gizmos to a minimum on the Scrambler 400 X.

The bike comes equipped with ride by wire throttle, slipper clutch, ABS, and immobilizer.

  • No Riding Modes
  • Switchable traction control (ON or OFF)
  • Switchable ABS (ON or OFF on front and rear tyres)
  • No In-built navigation
  • Simple Instrument cluster with analog dials and an LCD screen.
  • A neat USB-C charging socket is provided below the ignition key for on-the-move charging of smartphones and navigation systems.

Seat Comfort and Riding Posture:

The Scrambler 400 X is a roomier motorcycle, thanks to the wide and tall handlebar and footpegs, resulting in a commanding and comfortable seating position conducive for long hours of riding.

With a seat height of 835mm, short riders will have to tip-toe.

Pillion Comfort:

The pillion seat on the Scrambler 400 X is roomy, soft and comfortable for city commute and the occasional highway rides.

City Commute:

The 2024 Triumph Scrambler 400 X is a super easy and comfortable motorcycle to tackle the city traffic. 

The combination of light-clutch, crisp, smooth throttling, ample low-RPM power and plush, soft suspension with good ground clearance – makes the city commute, effortless and fun.

Touring:

The 2024 Triumph Scrambler 400 X is a lovely motorcycle to tour – great mid-range power, good suspension, room to strap luggage and comfortable seating ergonomics makes this an exceptional solo-touring motorcycle.

2-Up touring is a challenge, since there isnt enough room for luggage and the engine feels shortchanged upon heavier loads.

Mileage and Fuel Tank Range:

The Triumph Scrambler 400 X comes with fuel-gauge.

  • City Mileage: 25 kmpl
  • Highway Mileage: 32 kmpl
  • Full Tank capacity: 13 litres
  • Real world full tank range: 275 – 352 kms 

Being a high-compression engine, it is recommended to fill 95-octane fuel.

What I love about the 2024 Triumph Scrambler 400 X:

  • Overall Package: The engine, chassis and suspension come together effortlessly to deliver a beautiful, comfortable and an engaging riding experience – all this while looking extravagant.
  • Looks: The Triumph Scrambler 400 X is the most pleasant and stylish looking 400cc motorcycle in India – a modern Neo-retro design that draws eyeballs of both motorcyclists and the uninitiated.
  • Fit and Finish: Accumulating more brownie points is the superior level of fit and finish of the overall motorcycle and its components, switchgear, mirrors, fuel-tank, exhaust etc.
  • Service Interval: A generous service interval of 16,000kms / 12 months 

What I dislike:

  • Brakes: The front brakes are super spongy, offer no bite and feel for a motorcycle of this caliber.
  • Riding in Wet conditions: While the grip offered is ok, the rain and muck from the front and rear tyres get thrown onto the fuel tank, rear seat and onto the rider.
  • Headlights: While they look beautiful, the light throw is super poor and doesn’t facilitate good visibility. Cleaning the headlights is an absolute pain, since there is no space between the headlight grill and the headlight.
  • Standing up Riding Ergonomics: While the mirrors offer great visibility, they foul/obstruct the hands while standing up on the footpegs of the Scrambler 400 X.

Conclusion:

The 2024 Triumph Scrambler 400 X is a fantastic entry-level motorcycle – it is apt for:

  • Someone getting back into motorcycling after years
  • Someone graduating from lower capacity motorcycle – who prefers comfortable riding ergo over performance.

The 2024 Triumph Scrambler 400 X, handles well, the has a fun, punchy engine, inexpensive to maintain and service, the ergonomics and ride quality are comfortable and you won’t get tired looking at it!!
