Located on Assaye road, Cox Town – Backer & Charlie is a small German bakery and cafe serving delicious fare of German breads, pretzels, bagels, sandwiches, berliners, cakes and coffee.

The basic ambiance and limited dine-in capacity of this German bakery is eclipsed by the lip smacking praegel, pretzels, berliners, hot chocolate and coffee – which are fresh, delicious and worthy of multiple visits.

Bread served at Backer & Charlie:

They bake 5 types of bread – used for sandwiches and one can also buy them at the counter.

• Kaiserbrotchen: white bread bun that goes well with breakfast
• Kornerbrotchen: crunchy rye-based bread
• Kasebrotchen: mozzarella and cheddar cheese-based bread
• Saurteigbrotchen: sourdough bread
• Focaccia: they make 2 varieties: 
  • Jalapeno, Onion & Walnut Focaccia
  • Olive and Rosemary Focaccia

What to Eat:

• Laugenbrezel: Their signature Pretzel baked with sea salt, served with fresh strawberry jam and butter – Mindbogglingly delicious !! 
  • This is my 1^st Pretzel ever and its instant-love 🥨😊 
  • Tastes best with the butter and jam!
• Scallion and Cream Cheese Praegel: A Pretzel Bagel with cream cheese and topped with scallions – rich, filling and supremely tasty!!
• Wild Shrooms & Blue Cheese Pretzel: savoury pretzel filled with assorted mushrooms and blue cheese – very delicious 🤤
• Caprese-Insalata Focaccia: Sandwich made with Focaccia bread, basil pesto, fresh mozzarella, tomatoes, roquttes, balsamic reduction
• Nutella Pretzel: Sea salt and Nutella come together to make this Pretzel, a fantastic dessert – love it!!
• Berliner-Schokolade: aka Chocolate berliner with rich dark-chocolate filling inside the soft dounghnut bun – the best Berliner in Bengaluru 🥰
• Berliner-Marmelade: berliner filled with fresh strawberry jam – which is good. But any-day the chocolate berliner is the winner.
• Hot Chocolate – Dark: delicious, rich hot chocolate – perfect for this rainy season
• Hazelnut Cold Coffee (Regular Milk): very delicious and way better than the regular cold coffee. Cold coffee can be customised to be prepared with regular/oat/almond milk.

Useful Information:

• Descriptive Menu: Like me, if your German food vocabulary is ‘zilch’,  then fret not, the menu is very descriptive, easy to comprehend and the cafe staff is extremely sweet and patient to explain the food.
• For the Vegetarian: While the menu is loaded with an array of meats (baked, cooked, cold-cuts etc), the vegetarian options are restricted to ‘cheese-based’ OR ‘mushroom-based’ foods only – which are absolutely delicious!!
• Ambiance: the cafe has 2 sections:
  • Indoor AC dining
  • Outdoor dining (non-AC) | Smoking is NOT allowed in the outdoor dining area
  • Best suited to hang out with friends, family, kids, couples.
  • Pet-friendly: No
• Service:
  • Its a pre-paid cafe – one has to place the order, pay-first at the billing-counter and then food is served at your table. 
  • It’s annoying when in a big group – to remember a large order, queue up at the counter to order 😞
  • Overall service (after placing the order) is quick, we found the staff courteous and warm 👍🏻
• NOT for big groups of over 4 people: 
  • Limited seating capacity (max 20-22 people) and the fact that one has to queue-up, pay and order at the counter makes it “non-convenient” option for large groups.
  • Weekends are crowded – so if you are group of more than 4, anticipate a waiting time of atleast 20-30 mins
• Not a Typical Bakery: Unlike a traditional bakery, one cannot buy a complete loaf of your favourite German bread and is restricted to buy a single slice/portion.
• Facilities:

  • Breast-feeding room: Not available 
  • Wheelchair Access: No – cafe is accessible ONLY by a flight of stairs
  • Wheelchair Friendly Toilet:  No 
  • Customer Toilets: are clean, well-maintained and common for men and women
  • Food Parcel/Takeaway: They parcel all the items on the menu
  • Food Delivery: Listed on popular food delivery apps
  • EV Charging Point: No EV charging point is available at the premise for cars or motorcycles
• Weekend Breakfast Timings: They serve a full-platter breakfast on weekends ONLY between 9am to 11am
• Cost of the Meal: for 2 adults is INR 2,000
• Mode of Payment: Cash, UPI, Credit and Debit cards are all accepted
• Parking for motorcycles & cars:
  • NO designated parking space for two-wheelers and cars
  • Highly recommend to take a cab/auto – since finding a parking spot for your personal car, motorcycle is very tough
• Timings:
  • Tuesday to Friday – 10 am to 7 pm
  • Saturday & Sunday – 9 am to 6 pm
  • CLOSED on Mondays
