The burgeoning traffic gets the worst out of us, we tend to commit ‘Blunders on the road ‘ and overlook them most of the time, risking the life of ourselves and other motorists on the road.
Here are the five common blunders, I see the most on our roads, hopefully an awareness about them will lead to some correction:
1) Respect the Line:
There is damn good reason why the ‘Stop Line‘ at a traffic signal is present, most motorists (especially motorcyclists) tend to CROSS and STOP AHEAD of the Stop Line and sometimes even on the ZEBRA CROSSING meant for pedestrians.
Always stop your vehicle Behind the Stop Line and not ahead of it.
2) Helmet is for the Head:
It is so weird to see motorcyclists carry helmets on their arms, on top of the fuel tank and some great souls dont even bother to disturb the helmet from the helmet lock, I mean WAKE UP FELLAS; Helmets are meant to adorn your head for protection, not else where.
MUST FOLLOW TIP: For Heaven’s Sake ‘ STRAP or BUCKLE ‘ your helmet and ride; UNSTRAPPED HELMET is the same as NO HELMET offering no protection to the rider’s head in the event of a crash.
3) Get rid of the Hands Free:
‘Hands Free’ communication devices keep your ‘ HANDS FREE but not your MIND ‘. Keep your distractions to a minimum when driving or riding on the road.
DON’T PLONK YOUR EARS WITH EARPHONES TO LISTEN TO MUSIC, YOU WILL NOT HEAR OTHER VITAL SOUNDS IN TRAFFIC, SUCH AS ALARMS OF EMERGENCY VEHICLES.
4) Jumping Traffic Lights during the night:
Jumping or not stopping at a traffic light especially after 9pm has become a norm in most of the Indian cities. Then there are these JACKASSES, who honk at the guy waiting at the Red Light to give them way and others give you Weird Looks for waiting at the Red Light.
The CAB guys consider stopping at a Red Light after 9pm, A TABOO; where has the traffic sense disappeared !!!
Respect the Red Traffic Light, else you will end up in a van with a Red Light on its top 😛
5) The Right Lane Idiots:
So you are driving at a decent speed on the RIGHT (SPEED) LANE and you find this ‘ DUMBO ‘ puttering on his 100cc motorcycle or the ‘ GODS OF THE ROAD ‘ aka Autorickshaws relishing the road, I call them the ‘Right Lane Idiots‘.
Just to clear the confusion, We in India follow RIGHT HAND DRIVE system where the Right Most Lane is the fastest and overtaking lane and not the other way round like in the USA.
We need to consciously look at avoiding such blunders on the road because our kids will ape us and the BLUNDER gets passed down to the next generation.
CUT THE BLUNDER !!!
Ride Safe and Long 🙂
